- After a nationwide search and competitive procurement process, the County has entered into a contract with Clark Construction and RAM Construction, who will lead a team responsible for designing and building the new jail and behavioral care center.

- Residents of Whatcom County can safely and responsibly dispose of old or leftover household paint at a Free Paint Collection & Recycling Event. The event will take place on Saturday, October 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at the Civic Stadium parking lot.
- An independent evaluation of local Permanent Supportive Housing projects found that all Whatcom County government-funded programs meet national standards set by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

- Earlier this week the Washington State Department of Health expanded access to the COVID-19 vaccine through a new standing order that allows qualified health care professionals to vaccinate anyone 6 months and older with the latest COVID-19 vaccine.

- The Whatcom County Auditor’s Office is excited to announce the launch of the Property Recording Alert Service (PRAS). This free service is designed to enhance the monitoring of recording activity related to land records.
- We are now accepting proposals for severe weather or seasonal winter shelter in Bellingham for the 2024-2025 winter season.
- Due to increasingly dry weather conditions, the Whatcom County Fire Marshal’s office, has ordered a Stage 2 Burn Ban placing restrictions on all open burning
- We’ve published temporary severe weather shelter jobs for the 2025-2026 winter season, and we remain committed to hiring nearly twice as many temporary staff as last winter.
- Whatcom County is issuing its Final Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) pursuant to the State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA).
- Signs posted in these areas read “20 MPH When Children Are Present.” The reduced speed limit will be enforced beginning September 2, in time for the first day of school.
- Whatcom County’s top planner is retiring after thirteen years of service to the County.
- The FDA and CDC are investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella illness linked to several varieties of Deep-brand frozen sprouted bean products. To date, 11 illnesses have been connected to this outbreak, including one in Washington State.
- Southwind Foods, LLC of Carson, California, is voluntarily recalling a limited quantity of Frozen Shrimp due to possible radionuclide (Cesium-137) contamination.
- Crews will be working along the Birch Bay Berm Monday through Thursday, August 25–28, between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m., to install a wooden sand fence in select areas.
